What’s New in Normandy Overlord Guide v1.01
In version 1.01 of Normandy Overlord Guide, we’re expanding your battlefield lens beyond the Normandy beaches themselves. Two major new thematic modules invite you to deepen your understanding of the entire Overlord enterprise:
An overall view of the invasion force on D-Day
“Beyond Normandy”: the BOLERO buildup in England with geolocated sites
Exercise Tiger (Slapton Sands, Devon)
Invasion Force on D-Day
The Normandy landing, the largest amphibious operation in history, involved about 150,000 men (naval personnel and infantry) on 1,213 ships.
App research goes further; you can also figure out the number of battleships, monitors, cruisers, destroyers, auxiliary ships, merchant ships, and 4,126 landing boats on the maritime area. On air, you will discover the figures of combat aircraft, transport aircraft, and gliders employed for airborne assault.
All these resources allowed the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944, with over 80,000 fighters.
BOLERO buildup phase
The OVERLORD plan, divided into five phases, began with the BOLERO phase in January 1942.
A massive force of various nationalities trained and prepared for the invasion. Discover the number of American, British, Canadian and smaller involved contingents of other countries.
A substantial force was assembled in supply and vehicles areas: for example about 16 million tons of supplies. Do you know the number of armored vehicles or artillery pieces or transport vehicles or aircrafts?
Exercise Tiger
What was it? Exercise Tiger was a full-scale rehearsal conducted in late April 1944, simulating amphibious landings on a stretch of the English coast chosen because of its resemblance to Utah Beach. But was a disaster with many casualties discover what went wrong?
By bringing this English geolocated site (Slapton Sands, Devon) into the guide you can imagine the level the awareness and preparation of soldiers previously to landings. Even compare the similarity between this beach and Utah Beach.
